The three of them wind up leaving the party long before the nominations, which aren’t being announced until eight AM. Isaac doesn’t miss the way Gilbert watches him and Samantha the rest of the time they’re there, like he’s not sure what he’s seeing.

Isaac knows exactly what the man’s thinking—he’s seen it before. Gilbert Randolph is the type of man who has more respect for another man’s ‘property’ than he would for a single woman, but Isaac would bet his salary that Gilbert’s also got some serious reservations about a brother laying claim to a pretty white girl.

Once they leave, they pile into the back of Sam’s car in tired silence, Sam curled up between Ethan and Isaac, keeping them close to her. When her driver asks where to, she says, “Take me home, then take these two wherever they want to go.”

“Are you sure?” Ethan asks. “You don’t have to be alone right now if you don’t want to be.”

“I’m sure,” she says, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek. “I’m just going to wash my face and go to sleep. And I’m betting you two have better things to do than to babysit me.”

Isaac jolts at that realization. He’d gotten so caught up in trying to fix Sam’s problem, he’d nearly forgotten what happened right beforehand. He doesn’t look at Ethan, afraid of what he’ll see, but his belly flutters with the knowledge that they could. They could go back to Ethan’s place, or his.

Sam is like a cat between them, putting her head on Ethan’s shoulder and her feet on Isaac’s lap. Isaac looks at her with exasperated affection and squeezes her hand.

“Love you guys,” she mumbles, already looking sleepy.

They have to wake her when the driver gets to her building, but she insists on getting herself to her apartment alone.

Once she’s gone, the driver asks, “Where to, gentlemen?”

Only then do they exchange looks, and Ethan looks as uncertain as Isaac feels. Ethan tilts his head and gives a little shrug, and that’s enough to decide it. Isaac gives the driver his address, and once the car is moving again, he reaches for Ethan’s hand.
